Payroll Introduction Course
Get the fundamentals wrong and the consequences don’t stay small. An incorrect tax code, a payslip missing a legal requirement, a starter set up on the wrong basis each one looks minor until HMRC, an employee, or a tribunal disagrees. Most payroll teams learn this the hard way, through trial and error on live payrolls.
This two-day course is built to close that gap properly. You’ll build a solid, practical understanding of how the UK tax and National Insurance system works rates, thresholds, personal allowances, pay periods, and the tax calendar and leave with the skills to apply it to real payroll tasks from day one.
What You’ll Achieve
- A solid grasp of UK tax and National Insurance: You will understand how rates, thresholds, personal allowances, pay periods, and the tax calendar fit together the foundation every other payroll skill builds on.
- Confidence calculating tax and NI manually: You will know how to work through tax codes, HMRC changes, and different calculation methods step by step, rather than relying on software to get it right for you.
- Correct handling of new starters and leavers: You will be able to process P45’s and starter checklists accurately, so new employees are set up correctly and leavers are processed without error.
- Payslips that meet every legal requirement: You will know exactly what must appear on a payslip and be able to produce compliant payslips as a matter of course.
- Confident handling of statutory payments: You will understand Statutory Maternity Pay, Maternity Leave rights, and Statutory Sick Pay including entitlements and exclusions so you can apply them correctly rather than guessing.
- The ability to manage Court Orders and deductions: You will know how to handle Child Support, Council Tax, and attachment orders correctly, reducing the risk of miscalculated deductions.
